親の収入や学歴が子供の教育水準に影響するというのはよく知られた話だが、家にある本の量の方が予測力が高いそうだ：

子供の教育年数に対して、500冊以上の本がある家で育つことは、親が大学教育を受けていることや、専門職で働いていることと同じレベルの効果をもたらしているそうだ。

しかし、本を買うのが非常に困難というほど低所得の家庭は少ないし、図書館では無料で本が借りられる。これだけの効果があるならどうして本へアクセスできない子供が多いのか。

その答えの一つは、本を買って読むという行為が異質なものとして捉えられていることにある。要するに本屋や図書館に行くのに気後れするということだろう。
